On July 19, 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center posted an elevated risk of extreme heat for large parts of the southern, central, and western U.S. from July 27 to August 2.
The outlook highlighted a moderate risk of extreme heat in parts of the Plains and nearby Mississippi Valley from July 27 to July 29, plus rapid-onset drought risk in part of the northern Great Plains.
NWS HeatRisk describes extreme heat as long-duration heat with no overnight relief that can affect health systems, industries, and infrastructure.

Heat is not only weather. Heat is a pressure test on the small systems your house depends on.
Parallel 1: New York’s 1896 Heat Wave Forced Relief Into The Street

The 1896 New York heat wave showed how heat follows housing, work, and city design.
In August 1896, New York City was hit by a brutal heat wave in a city built long before air conditioning.
The Tenement Museum describes it as the deadliest heat wave in New York City history. Contemporary accounts and later histories describe a city where crowded tenements, hard labor, dense streets, and little nighttime relief turned heat into a public emergency.
One detail is especially useful for a preparedness reader: relief had to be moved into reach.
Theodore Roosevelt, then New York City Police Commissioner, became known for pushing ice distribution through police stations. City workers opened hydrants. Parks became overnight sleeping places for people whose rooms were too hot. Work schedules were adjusted so laborers were not trapped in the worst midday heat.
None of those fixes changed the weather.
They changed the route to relief.
That is the direct household lesson. If your cool room, water, phone charger, neighbor check, or shade plan only exists as a vague idea, it will be hard to use under stress. The 1896 city had to turn relief into locations: station, hydrant, park, adjusted workday.
Your household can do the smaller version.
The comparison is narrow. A modern family is not a tenement district in 1896. But heat still exposes the same kind of weakness: the difference between “we should cool off” and “this is the room, this is the water, this is the charger, this is who we call.”

Parallel 2: Persian Qanats Built The Water Path Underground

The qanat made water available by building the path before the heat needed it.
Across arid Iran, ancient communities built a water technology that still feels almost impossible when you first understand it.
The Persian qanat used a gently sloping underground tunnel to move groundwater from an aquifer toward fields and settlements. UNESCO describes each qanat as a nearly horizontal tunnel collecting water from an underground source, with vertical shafts along the route for spoil removal and ventilation.
The genius was not only that water moved.
It moved underground, protected from much of the evaporation that punishes open canals in hot dry climates.
In 2016, UNESCO inscribed the Persian Qanat as a World Heritage Site. The listed system includes qanats with water reservoirs and watermills, and UNESCO notes the traditional communal management that supported sustainable water sharing and distribution.
That is a readiness masterclass.
The Persians did not wait until the hottest afternoon to ask, “Where is the water?” They built a path, maintained it, and made the route part of community life.
Your house does not need a qanat. But it does need visible routes for the critical three: water, power, shade.
Where is the water if the tap is interrupted? Where is the power if the wall outlet is out? Where is shade if the sunny side of the house becomes unusable? Who knows the route besides you?
The scale is tiny compared with ancient Persia. The pattern is the same.
Heat punishes hidden systems. Readiness makes the route visible.
