CURRENT SIGNAL

NOAA’s Atlantic outlook calls for a 55% chance of a below-normal season, a 35% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of an above-normal season.

The outlook gives a 70% chance of 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes.

Those numbers describe total activity across a very large basin.

NOAA is clear about the limit: the seasonal outlook does not tell us how many storms will hit land, how strong a landfall will be, or which place will be struck.

That last line is the part a household should keep.

A lower storm count can lower total risk across the ocean. It cannot lower the wind speed at the one house a storm reaches.

The forecast is about frequency. Your checklist is about exposure.

That is why today’s job is small and physical.

Do not prepare for an entire season. Remove five things the next hard wind could use against your home.

The Tap Feels Permanent… Until The Day It Does Not

Most households never think of running water as a supply line. You turn the handle. Water appears. So your brain files the problem under “solved.”

But storms can break routines in ways the forecast never puts on the front page—power failures, boil notices, damaged infrastructure, blocked roads, or simply the wrong problem at the wrong address.

When one source supplies something you cannot go long without, a second path buys more than water. It buys breathing room.

This presentation uses a dramatic weather hook, but the reason to inspect it is simpler: it presents a household water-backup approach you can evaluate before the faucet becomes the only plan you have.

PARALLEL 1: HURRICANE ANDREW, 1992

The 1992 season produced only seven named storms, but Andrew became a Category 5 landfall.

By the middle of August 1992, the Atlantic had been strangely quiet.

The system that became Andrew did not even earn a name until August 17. It was the first named storm of the season.

For several days, strong wind high in the atmosphere tore at the storm. Its thunderstorms came and went. Andrew looked weak enough that it could have become one more swirl that vanished over open water.

Then the weather around it changed.

The wind shear fell. Air began flowing out of the top of the storm more freely. A strong ridge helped drive Andrew west. The storm grew fast.

On August 24, Andrew crossed southern Florida as a Category 5 hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center later listed a central pressure of 922 millibars and peak winds of 150 knots over the Atlantic. In Dade County, 15 people died directly, about 250,000 were left without homes for a time, and damage was vast.

Yet the full 1992 season still ended with only seven named storms. That was seven fewer than today’s 1991–2020 normal. It had four hurricanes and one major hurricane.

On a season chart, 1992 was quiet.

At a house in Homestead, it was not.

That is the useful split.

A basin count adds every storm together. A roof only meets the storm that reaches it.

This does not mean 2026 will repeat 1992. Forecast tools, building rules, warnings, and the climate pattern are different.

It means a low total can still contain one severe local event.

Averages can lower attention at the exact moment a household should use the calm to remove easy weaknesses.

PARALLEL 2: ALEXANDRIA AND THE RETREATING SEA, A.D. 365

In A.D. 365, the retreating sea was a warning, but some people moved toward it.

Just after daybreak on July 21, A.D. 365, a great earthquake struck near western Crete.

The shock reached across the eastern Mediterranean. It damaged towns from Crete to the Greek mainland and sent a tsunami toward other coasts.

Years later, the Roman writer Ammianus Marcellinus described what people saw.

The sea pulled far away from shore.

Ships dropped onto exposed ground. Fish and sea life were left in the wet mud. Parts of the seabed that people had never seen were suddenly open to the sun.

Some people walked out.

They gathered fish by hand and explored the strange new ground.

Then the water returned.

The wave smashed into islands and coastlines. At Methone, in Greece, Ammianus later saw a ship that had been carried about two miles inland. Alexandria also suffered badly.

The event is far removed from a modern hurricane outlook. It was an earthquake and tsunami, not a tropical storm. Ancient people did not have satellites, forecast cones, or phone alerts.

So the comparison should stay narrow.

What looked like a calm, open path was actually part of the danger.

The people at the shore saw an unusual sign. The useful action was to move away and uphill. Curiosity pulled some in the other direction.

We face a milder version of that thinking error today.

A “below-normal” label feels like the water pulling back. It creates room. It lowers urgency. It can make the threat look farther away than it is.

But the label is not an all-clear.

The right response to a quiet signal is not fear. It is to use the extra room before the situation moves.

THE PATTERN TO NOTICE

Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: a broad or temporary calm can hide a sharp local threat, so use calm time to close simple weaknesses.

Do not ask whether this will be a busy season.

Ask what the next hard wind can pick up, break, clog, or throw at your house.

That question gives you work you can finish today.

  7. Write the number 5 on your calendar. Repeat the loop before a local watch or warning if it is safe to do so.

Measurable win: five wind hazards are removed and one water path is clearer than it was 12 minutes ago.
