In its Aug. 24 short-range discussion, WPC said Southern Plains highs could reach 100–110°F while some areas break daily high and low-temperature records. The low matters because a house that never sheds yesterday's heat starts the next day already loaded.

That second line is easy to miss.

Most people plan around the afternoon high. But the body and the house both need a lower point. When bedrooms stay hot after dark, the heat load carries into the next day.

In July 1995, the heat stayed dangerous well after sunset.

On July 13, 1995, Midway Airport in Chicago reached 106°F.

The air was also very wet. The heat index climbed to about 124 to 125°F that afternoon.

Then the sun went down, but relief did not arrive.

The National Weather Service says heat index values stayed above 100°F well after sunset in the city. Brick, concrete, and asphalt held heat. High humidity slowed cooling. Many apartments stayed dangerous.

More than 500 people died in Chicago during the heat wave, with hundreds more deaths across the Midwest.

Many deaths were not found in outdoor work sites. They were found inside homes. Some older residents lived alone, feared opening windows, or had no working air conditioning. A room could become the hazard.

The disaster changed the way the city and weather office worked. They built clearer heat warning rules and stronger emergency coordination.

Later heat plans added check-ins, cooling help, and clearer triggers. That shift matters: a forecast became useful only when it pointed to a person, a room, and a move that could happen in time.

The lesson was not only “summer gets hot.” Chicago had seen high temperatures before.

The sharper lesson was that heat risk grows when the body gets no break. A long hot stretch is not a row of separate afternoons. It is one load that can keep building through the night.

Today's southern heat is not the same event. But the recovery pattern is worth noticing. A bedroom that never cools can turn yesterday's heat into today's starting point.

PARALLEL 2: MESA VERDE PUT SHADE AND WATER CLOSE

Mesa Verde families placed shelter near shade, stone, and scarce water.

From about 550 to 1300 CE, Ancestral Pueblo people lived and farmed in the Mesa Verde region.

In the late 1100s, some families moved from mesa-top villages into cliff-side alcoves. The best-known dwellings were built mostly from the late 1190s through the late 1270s.

The alcoves did more than make walls look strong.

Families shaped rooms from sandstone blocks and mud mortar. Some cliff villages held only a few rooms. The largest held more than 150. Storage rooms kept dried food close to living space.

They gave cover from wind, rain, snow, and hard sun. Many were also close to seep springs, some of the few steady water sources in the area. Tree-ring evidence shows long droughts during the time these sites were used.

The homes were not modern cooling systems. Life there was hard, and the people later moved south for many reasons.

Still, the placement teaches a clean readiness rule: put the safer space near what the hazard takes away.

Water access may have grown more important as drought made mesa-top sources less steady. Moving a home was a huge choice, but it moved a daily need closer too.

In a dry, exposed land, shade and water were not afterthoughts. They shaped where a family could sleep, store food, and gather.

The narrow link to a modern heat plan is simple. You may have air conditioning, fans, and a car. But you still need to know which room holds less heat and where you can go if the main room stops being safe.

A cool route should exist before the hot night begins.
