The Morris Worm showed how quickly one connected path could become the reason organizations disconnected from the network.

PARALLEL 1 — 1988: THE MORRIS WORM TURNED CONNECTION INTO THE PROBLEM

On November 2, 1988, the Internet was still tiny by modern standards.

Roughly 60,000 computers were connected.

Then a self-replicating program began spreading through weaknesses in Unix systems.

It became known as the Morris Worm.

The worm was not designed to destroy files, but a flaw made it copy itself too aggressively.

Machines became overloaded.

Networks slowed.

Administrators struggled to understand what was happening while the same network they needed for communication was helping the problem spread.

Estimates commonly place the number of affected computers around 6,000 — roughly one in ten Internet-connected machines at the time.

Some organizations disconnected themselves from the network to protect systems while they worked on the problem.

That created a strange situation.

Connection had been the capability.

Now disconnection was part of the recovery.

The incident helped lead to creation of the first Computer Emergency Response Team at Carnegie Mellon.

The lasting lesson is not “the Internet is dangerous.”

It is that connected systems need a recovery path that still works when connection is the failure mode.

A system is not ready because it works normally. It is ready when people know how to recover after the normal path becomes part of the problem.

The Persian Royal Road made long-distance communication more dependable by building known relay stations into the route.

PARALLEL 2 — PERSIA: THE MESSAGE HAD A NEXT HANDOFF

The Achaemenid Persian Empire stretched across an enormous territory.

A ruler in Susa could not simply shout instructions to Sardis.

Messages had to travel hundreds of miles across difficult terrain.

The Persian Royal Road helped solve that movement problem.

Ancient sources describe an organized courier system with relay stations and fresh horses along the route.

A single rider did not have to carry one message from beginning to end.

The message survived because the next handoff was already built into the system.

Herodotus famously praised the couriers for continuing through snow, rain, heat and darkness — wording that later inspired the well-known postal-service motto.

The Persian system was imperial infrastructure, not a household account-recovery plan.

But the design is directly useful.

The courier's strength was not an immortal horse.

It was the relay.

At a station, the exhausted resource could be replaced.

The message continued.

The system protected the function by making the next handoff known in advance.
