What’s happening now?

The clocks went back Sunday across most of the country. A drive you made in daylight last week may now take you past fields and tree lines at dusk. November also falls in deer mating season in many places.

A deer in the road is easy to focus on. The useful thing to watch for is what might follow it from the same edge of the road.

Has this happened before?

In 1900, Congress passed the Lacey Act. Illegal trade had helped put pressure on wild animals, including deer. The law gave officials a way to act when illegally taken wildlife crossed state lines.

What happened next?

Deer came back in many areas over the following decades with protections and wildlife management. Today the road and the field can both be busy at the same hour. Knowing where they meet gives you a place to change your driving before you need to brake.

What can I do?

Pick one stretch of your usual drive where woods or fields meet the road. If you can, drive it before dark. If you can’t, slow down early, scan the road edges, and leave more room ahead. If a deer appears, brake firmly and stay in your lane if possible. Look for more before picking up speed.
